Spring Term Information 2010
This term we have working in our class Mrs Marie Perratt and Miss Alison Mitcham, who are on their training placement from the University of Exeter.
Yr 6 - so the Yr 6 have additional support for their SATs in the Summer Term we will again be organising some sessions after half term where these children will have some separate time from the rest of the class for revision, and consolidation with Mrs Quick. More details about this will follow over the coming weeks.
Equipment - Please ensure children have all their writing equipment each day.
Water Bottles - If children bring their own to school these need to be taken home each day and washed thoroughly. Water from a water cooler is available for the children during the day.
PE Kits - Please don't forget PE kits are needed on a Tuesday and Friday and requests for children to be excused from PE should only be for medical reasons and should always be put in writing by a parent or guardian.
Clothing - All clothing should be named. This reduces the amount of time sorting out lost property for both parents and teachers.
Medicines - Teachers will administer medicines but the correct ‘Green Form’ must be signed by a parent or guardian before this is done. Pupils are allowed to keep possession of their own inhalers but, again, the correct forms must be completed and teachers informed.
Homework - This term as well as the usual homework there may be extra revision homework for Yr 6. Maths is given out on a Wednesday to be returned by the Friday and literacy given out on Friday to be returned on the Monday. Science may sometimes be given on a Monday but this is not returned until the following Monday. We gauge homework to last approximately 35 minutes. If you find it is taking longer especially over one hour please stop it and let us know via the homework diary or in person.
Reading - Children are expected to undertake private reading each day in class and at home.
Rewards - The children can earn a non-uniform day with gold cards. If they earn a non-uniform day we ask them to take it on the following Friday. The children also have a non-uniform day on their birthday.
Coly Class - Spring Term Overview (2010)
Humanities - This term our topics will be on the Victorians; looking at the homelife, working conditions and education of children in the period and later on a geographical study of different settlements around the UK; looking at the differences between rural and urban populations. If you have any Victorian Artefacts you would be willing to share with us we would greatly appreciate them being brought to school. Items can be left with us for this half-term or just left with us for the day (Wednesdays preferably).
Science - This term the topics being covered are Friction and Forces and later on Changing Sounds.
R.E.- We will be working from a new unit of work called "It Matters to Me, It Matters to Others"; looking at what is important to us and for people in other cultures. Later on in the term the children will be looking at symbols and religious expression, together with the Easter Story.
ICT - This term the children will be analysing data from a Victorian Census, formulating their own questionnaires and putting the information into spreadsheets. Later on they will be using a graphic modelling package to produce plans and designs for a new playground.
Literacy - The children are starting with a unit of work based around Myths, Legends and Fables. We would welcome any examples of these to be brought in from home. Later on the children will be changing to a non-fiction topic centred arguments and persuasive writing, together with recounts and non-chronological reports. In reading the focus will be on comprehension and understanding a variety of texts including poetry.
Maths - Many areas of mathematical skills will be covered this term including symmetry, measure including reading scales, 3D shapes and time. In number the children will be looking at decimal fractions, division, negative numbers, as well as developing and furthering their understanding of calculating using all for operations. Pupils need to be confident in recalling their time tables to successfully access many of these activities; it would be helpful if you could practice tables with your children at home.
Art and Technology - As we didn't have time last term the construction making using wood has been rolled over to this term. In Art the children will be drawing, painting a variety of different landscapes. If you have any photographs of interesting buildings, man-made structures, or natural features I know Mrs Wilson would welcome them being brought into school for the children to use.
As you can appreciate teachers are busy in the mornings preparing work that will provide a high quality education for your children. With this in mind we request that pupils are not brought into the class until 8:40am onwards unless prior arrangements have been made. We are available for brief discussions about things you feel we need to know about your children but prefer that discussions of a longer nature be held after school when we can give you arid your children the time you deserve. This can be an informal talk or a more formal appointment at a mutually agreed time.
