Fruit
We run a healthy tuck shop at school, it operates during morning play. The children can buy fruit, yoghurt raisins or cartons of fruit juice (depending on availability) Everything costs 20p and it is helpful if your child only brings 20p per day. We have Free Fruit (from the Government) that is given out in the afternoons
Stamps
When children have worked particularly hard or made a special effort they are rewarded with a stamp on their hands. This is so that you can reinforce it at home. There is a sliding scale of rewards that eventually lead to a non uniform day — we will let you know if your child has earned a non uniform day.
Naming clothes
Will you please name all of your childs clothes — indelible pen or name tags are best. It is impossible for us to keep track of clothes that are unnamed, This includes shirts, vests etc when we have swimming or PE.
Reading
Your child will bring home a book bag with a reading book. It is very advantageous to your child if you get into the routine of doing some book based activity every night. Your child might initially be very tired but the activity does not have to be onerous — you could read to him/her, discuss the characters, decide on another ending, look for specified things in the pictures etc etc. If the child is focussed on the book and you are sharing an activity based on the book it will be valuable. It is your responsibility to change the book when you are ready.
Paint
Obviously we will do our best to keep your child paint free but if it does happen try soaking and rinsing the clothes in cold water first then washing them with washing up liquid.
Birthdays
The School Council decided a few years ago that Birthdays should be Non Uniform. If your child’s birthday falls in the holidays or at the weekend they can have the Non Uniform day on the next school day.
Water
We have a water dispenser in class and the children can help themselves.
Homework
On Fridays the children will bring home their phonic books with the sounds they have done during the week. Could you reinforce them at home please. They will also bring some Literacy based homework for the weekend. If you do not have time to do the homework please let me know as we will often check or test these sounds on a Monday and it is useful to know who has practiced them at home. They will also get Numeracy homework on Wednesdays — this will be based on games and play activities. The children are not expected to do it all on one night — it is more a series of activities that you can do at any time so you can keep the sheets for reference. We do need to have some record that it has be done so there are reply sheets for you to let us know briefly how it went and problems that you might have had.
Swimming
Twice a year we do swimming for half a term instead of Showing. We go to The Flamingo Pool in Axminster, we go by coachfrom school at 2.45 (after afternoon play) and the children are to be collected by their parents from the swimming pool at 3.30. We understand if you need to be a little late because of collecting older children from school —just let us know. The children are very closely supervised and there is always an adult in the water with the children as well as parent helpers on the side of the pool in the unlikely event of an emergency. Please let us know if you have any concerns about swimming. This term we are swimming from 24th February to 31st March.
PE Kits
Children usually leave their PE Kit in school, only taking it home to be washed at half term. The latest advice on footwear states the plimsoles are now out! They don’t provide sufficient support for children’s feet and rarely fit properly. The recommendation now is for children to wear trainers. We only get changed for PE for Tuesdays Hall session — our other PE lessons are in the classroom or the playground and we do not get changed.
